Let’s nail one of the central lies of the ConDem Government that is repeated ad nauseum by Cameron and his lackey Clegg, the one about the deficit being the reason for the cuts.

Our deficit which resulted from the carnage visited upon our economy by the Banks stands at just 12% of GDP. That equates to a family bringing a grand a month being £120 over drawn on their current account at the end of the month. If you were down the pub, told this tale and then started bleating on about how you’d have to let the kids go to school with no shoes, or how you’d not be able to have the heating on, or give your Mum some flowers for her birthday you’d be laughed out of court and told to spend more wisely; maybe not get that new three piece suite for a couple of years, or postpone that holiday to Spain. No one would imagine that you were in crisis with money or the whole balloon was about to go up.

But this is the lie that the Tories and their toadies in the Lib Dems are bandying about, and we must put a stop to it. We must put this putrid mistruth to bed once and for all, otherwise the following tale will be played out all over the land, day after day, week after week, and year after year until the Coalition has got what it wants; wrecked Public Services, sluggish growth to produce a low wage maximum profit economy, and a vast dole queue to keep workers grateful and compliant.

The GMB Union have today announced that Rhondda Cynon Taff Council in South Wales have issued ALL their workers with redundancy notices and will only re employ people who accept a totally new contract which contains a pay cut, heavy restrictions on sick pay and an end to car allowances. The Council will not enter into any talks with workers until this premise is accepted.

This “Lock Out” approach has been deployed by Tory Birmingham City, and Walsall Councils. But the shock is that Rhondda is a Labour run Council. The Spending settlement has seen it’s capital grant slashed by a whopping £60 million for next year due to some complex formula which it is now emerging, hits Councils with high levels of dependency on social care the hardest.

We have to be forensic about this. Strikes and militancy will empower the head bangers such as Bob Crow and the SWP activists in UNITE. Alan Johnson and Ed Miliband need to prove with simple maths, real examples and relentless energy why the Coalition is doing what it is doing. We need to target Simon Hughes and the so called Orange Book Lib Dems and persuade them that it is their Party that is helping to deliver this noxious Tory agenda, and if they are serious, principled and pragmatic politicians then they will vote these measures down.

The emergence of this Coalition means that the Tories can use Clegg as a fig leaf and get away with stuff they never dreamed of as being possible if they ruled alone.

I don’t believe that the public (Lib Dems especially) voted for this, and that if Hughes did move to dissolve the Government the resulting Election would focus minds very differently.

And to conclude on these Tory lies. In 1997 we inherited a budget deficit from Major, didn’t bleat about it in order not to panic the Markets, raised the necessary capital through a windfall tax on the utilities, balanced the books, brought the structural debt down from 41% of GDP down to 30% in 2007 and in the meantime spent billions on developing World Class Public Services and took the NHS out of intensive care. Not bad a record eh?
