Last year, 67 Samaritans volunteers from the Hull branch answered 14,183 calls for help, according to the latest figures released by the national helpline charity. Overall in the region, 1,561 volunteers in the Yorkshire and the Humber answered 445,725 calls for help in 2012.
The figures are being released to coincide with the “Talk to Us” Campaign. Samaritans is taking this opportunity to say a very big “thank you” to the 20,980 generous volunteers who provide the round-the-clock service, answering more than five million calls for help, from people struggling to cope, each year.
Anne Smith, Branch Director of Hull Samaritans, said:
“Without our dedicated volunteers we wouldn’t be here for people struggling to cope. Volunteers from Hull Samaritans reach out to the local community. It’s clear from the call figures we’re releasing today, that sixty years after Samaritans was founded, people need us as much as they ever did. We would like to encourage anyone who is thinking of volunteering with us to come along to St. Stephens and find out more about what an enriching experience it can be to join our Branch”
Samaritans is available round the clock, every single day of the year. We provide a safe place for anyone struggling to cope, whoever they are, however they feel, whatever life has done to them.
