Starting at Victoria Square outside City Hall, this entertaining and informative tour takes in the many and varied sites Hull has to offer, including the Deep, the Museum Quarter, the Marina and of course the Pier area.
But what makes the tour so special and out of the ordinary is its guide the one and only Mally Welburn.
Mally was a well known figure all over Hull for many years due to his larger than life character and his fame was not always for conventional reasons. Mally has written about his life in our great city in gritty and sometimes searingly honest detail.
His autobiographies, especially “The Boy Who Flew Through Windows” document his early life and escapades growing up in the Hessle Road area of our City where life was tough but where the spirit and character that makes Hull the best place to live shine through. I found great inspiration from these books when life took an unexpected turn. His courage is an example to us all
Mally shot to national prominence via a win on Deal or No Deal where his roguish character won the hearts of the audience. He continued to catch the public eye when he unveiled his business venture of sports sheds made from re cycled pallets.
The Land Train is such a great idea and hopefully will be the place where visitors get an introduction to Hull and what we have to offer. Mally’s historical knowledge is second to none and delivered with much laughter and songs.
Here’s the thing. We are UK City of Culture in 2017. We may need outside input but why not appoint Mally Welburn as an Ambassador for the City of Culture? He ticks all the boxes and would be a fantastic advert for all that is good about Hull.
